Initial Sketch Exploration

Our talented artists initiated the design process by creating a diverse range of sketches to capture the distinctive essence of the Spectrum AI motherships. These initial drafts allowed us to explore various aesthetic themes and architectural forms that could embody the advanced technology of the AI entities. Each sketch proposed different elements of style and functionality that could potentially define the look of these formidable spacecraft.

Refinement and Selection

From the array of initial sketches, the team selected a few promising designs that aligned closely with the game's thematic requirements. These selected sketches underwent further refinement, transitioning from simple paper drafts to more detailed digital renderings. This iterative process involved constant revisions and consultations between artists and designers, ensuring that each design not only met aesthetic expectations but also functioned well within the game's parameters.

Exploring Combat and Defensive Features

With a solid base design in place, our focus shifted to the ship's operational capabilities, particularly its attack and defense systems. Various designs were explored to identify the most effective configurations that would enhance the ship's role in combat scenarios within the game. This stage was crucial for integrating the ship's aesthetic elements with its functional requirements, ensuring that it would be a formidable presence in the game's universe.

Finalizing the Design

After extensive development and iterative feedback, we achieved a robust design for our first Spectrum AI Mothership. This design was swiftly translated into 3D models to refine visual details and ensure fidelity to our conceptual vision. This stage allowed us to examine the mothership from multiple angles, ensuring that every aspect aligned with our design expectations.

Detailing and Adjustments

As the 3D model took shape, we continually refined the base design, adding intricate details and making adjustments based on both aesthetic appeal and functional requirements. This iterative process involved frequent back-and-forth discussions among the design team, allowing us to fine-tune the mothership's appearance and operational capabilities.

Deployment Mechanism Reevaluation

During stress testing, we identified a critical design flaw with the deployment mechanism of the smaller vessels. Originally intended to launch from the front, this setup proved problematic with the game's physics—deployed ships risked collision if released during mothership movement. To address this, we revised the deployment strategy to release ships from the mid-section, a safer and more practical approach that had already been proven effective in our DEMO.

Texture Application and Rendering

With the structural design finalized, our focus shifted to texturing. We carefully selected textures that would emphasize the mothership's advanced technology and imposing presence. After applying these textures, we rendered initial visuals, providing a glimpse into how the mothership would appear in-game.

In-Game Testing

Eager to see how the mothership would perform in a live game environment, our development team conducted preliminary tests within the DEMO. This testing phase was crucial for evaluating the integration of the mothership with the game's other elements and mechanics.

Real-World Application and Final Adjustments

The real-world application (in-game testing) highlighted further issues with the ship’s "arms/claws" and their positioning relative to the deployment bay. To resolve these issues, we made the decision to reposition the arms towards the back while maintaining the ship's menacing aesthetic. This adjustment ensured better functionality without compromising on the design ethos.

Practical Testing and Adjustments

Testing in the game environment is crucial for ensuring that design meets functionality. When we first integrated the mothership into Botwars Ascendance, we encountered unforeseen issues with the ship's "arms" and their deployment mechanisms. These arms, crucial for the ship's aesthetic and function, posed challenges during active gameplay. They interfered with the deployment of smaller vessels, necessitating a return to the design phase. To resolve this, we strategically relocated the arms further back on the ship's chassis to avoid interference while maintaining the intended aggressive and sleek appearance. This iterative process highlighted the importance of adaptability in game design.

In addition to structural changes, our focus shifted towards enhancing the ship's surface details and textures. This phase aimed to elevate the visual impact and ensure that the ship not only functioned well within the game's mechanics but also stood out aesthetically on the battlefield. Our team meticulously improved the textures, adding depth and realism to the ship's exterior, which enhanced the visual fidelity and player immersion. This detailed work ensures that each element of the ship contributes to a cohesive and immersive visual experience.

Final Visualization and Demo Implementation

Before final implementation into the demo version of the game, we conducted a series of high-resolution renderings to evaluate the updated design in dynamic environments and lighting conditions.
